The most shocking statement of our Lord Jesus Christ will be found in Matthew 7:23 when He said very plainly "I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!" Why is it shocking? There are two (2) reasons why it is shocking statement.
1) The statement was addressed to those who think they have relationship with the Lord Jesus
The repetition of Lord (v.22) gives an idea that this statement is for those people inside the church disguising like a sheep but in reality they are goats. These people think they have relationship already with Jesus but their lives speak for themselves that they do not have any relationship because the Lord will tell to them "I do not know you".
2) The statement was addressed to those who have part in the ministry.
In verse 22 there are three actions that pertain to ministry. The first one is prophesying, followed by healing, and the last performing miracles. Take note that this actions were identified with Jesus name (in Your name..). These people who have part in the ministry think that what they are doing is for the Lord but not. Because the Lord will tell to them "I do not know you...".
This statement was shocking for those who think they are saved but will be surprised at the coming judgment because they are deceived by their own false hope and false faith. Remember that Jesus does not know a man as His if that man is not a sheep. Mind this that the sheep hears his Master's voice and they follow HIm (John 10:27). And a sheep is not an evildoer but sin hater. Those who think they have relationship with Jesus, those who think they know Jesus and those who think they serve Him will be deceived by false hope and false profession of faith.
Note: Brothers it is important that we know Jesus as Lord and Savior and God. But it is also important to
be sure that Jesus knows us.
